Narrate and Evaluate the Final Essay: December 5, 2007
Posted by tonib15 in : Uncategorized , add a commentThe first step I took in creating this final essay paper was developing a topic in a sense of technology. I feel as though I fell short when I didn’t look deeper into the topic and was just basically “scrapping the surface”. I started off when this a very vague and simple topic of “Teens and Technology”, which was identified as too broad. Also, the first question that I focused on to reach this topic was “Is technology really taking over?” I think was told to break this topic down into parts, such as looking at Teens what type of age range was I looking for and then looking at Technology what specific type of techonology. So once I broke it down I came up with my age range which was ages 13-21, then I chose the technology of virtual communication such as text messaging and instant messaging…two very common sources of communication amongst this age range. I began to write my paper, but I ran into typical issues along the way like the way I was presenting my information and also the formation of my paper. I believe the most important part for my paper was the revising because at times I run into problems when it comes to the mechanics and organization of a paper. For the mechanics in my paper, I tend to write the way I talk sometimes which “fly over” well in my paper. For the Organization of my paper I would told that some of my paragraphs did not fit where they were in my paper, so I re-organized some of them and place some towards the back or completely deleted some. For my recent draft, I would rate the mechanics and organization at least a 7. Overall, I would rate my revision of the paper an 8, because to look at the paper I started with to me presents more of a research paper.
Reflection on the Digital Dimension:
Posted by tonib15 in : Uncategorized , add a commentI feel as though this class digital dimension of english 202 is very different but also much more interesting than a traditional classroom. The main attraction that I enjoyed in this class was the blogging process we went through with every in developing our final papers. I like that fact that we were able to blog and comment on our classmates blogs and at the same time recieve feedback on our own. In the near future, I would definitely consider using this because it brings about a whole different outlook on the course we are taking, I would also recommend it to a friend, because I know “digital dimension” is definitely a huge part of society today. At times, the only worry that may come to many students’ mind is the fact that you are able actually surf the net…which means more time on facebook and the myspace, and this could cause focusing problems in the classroom. Overall, the digital dimension of English 202 is one of the most interesting classes I have every taken.
Reflection on Draft Revision: December 3, 2007
Posted by tonib15 in : Uncategorized , add a commentThe progression of my paper was not as bad as I thought it would seem, but definitely towards the end, I ran into problems that I thought was going to be impossible to get myself out. As I said in the beginning, in the choosing of my focus question I had many that came to mind but the one I chose was too broad. I eventually had to break my question down into parts into to focus on a specific topic in technology. I started off with Teens and Technology, which was more a two part topic. I finally developed a specific topic which was The effects of virtual communication. On my first draft focused more on the statistcis of virtual communication users than the issues that are develop through virtual communication. In my revision blog, “Revise, Revise!” I stated many issues that I came across when revising my first draft.
Reflection on one Process Step:
Posted by tonib15 in : Uncategorized , add a commentI believe the steps to writing this paper help really narrow my focus question. In the beginning process by focus question was very broad and was much harder to develop a paper on. During this writing process, one blog assignment in class that basically narrowed my paper down was the “Fieldwork Plan”
The fieldwork plan basically help to form an audience towards this paper. At first my question was so broad that it had no specific audience, which is what I needed in order to even write an introduction for this research paper. My main audience goal was more of an age range 13-21. Since my paper was about virtual communication, I decided to make a choice of two different types of virtual communication. I chose two of the most popular amongst this age range which is Text messaging and Instant Messaging. Once I had my two topics, I chose the interview activity in the fieldwork plan, which brought about more ideas for this paper. From that point on, the process of my paper began to really flow.

Posted by tonib15 in : Uncategorized , add a comment1.)On the first page of paper, I need to develop my introduction a little more by arriving at the less the issue of my paper with more detail.
2.)Throughout the body of my paper, I need to clarify more of the issues that take part in my paper, such as breaking it down into the uses, attractions and problems of virtual communication.
3.)Also, I need to organize my paragraphs. Such as the 8th paragraph of my paper doesn’t fall into the place, where it is at. I believe I can place it after the interview section.
4.)For the interview, I can mainly quote the answers from the interviewees instead of place the whole answer into my paper.
5.)To length my paper, I need to bring about more studies, stastics or facts on teens and virtual communication.

Rough Draft…

Communication is known as a process that allows organisms to exchange information by several methods. In society today, the most common communication amongst teens is known as virtual communication. In virtual communication it contains two foremost messaging systems known as Instant Messaging and cellular phone text messaging.
There are many effects that are brought when it comes to virtual communication. Some issues that have been spoken about are low social skills, lack of face-to-face conversations and/or even weak writing skills. These are just a few issues that are most commonly emphasized on.
Instant messaging allows direct communication between many different people at the same time and very hastily. The first form of instant messaging purposes began to appear in the 1970s on multi-user operating systems such as UNIX. As of March 2006, the most commonly used messaging system called AOL Instant Messenger or also known as “AIM” was the leading user amount with a total of 53 million active users worldwide.
As quoted in wikepedia, text messages are also often used to interact with automated systems, such as ordering products and services for mobile phones, or participating in contests. The development of text messaging was created back in 1989 when a young woman by the name of Raina Fortini supposedly sent a text messaging from New York through her beeper (which was also a commonly used source of communication) to her friend in Florida. She turned the beeper upside down and they began to communicate with a very short vocabulary use, which consisted of only a couple numbers.
As a user of virtual communication, such as instant messaging and text messaging or even e-mailing, I have my opinion of negative and positive facts. When it comes to virtual communication I find myself more comfortable communicating than face-to-face communication, which eventually causes problems for me; I know there are many other young teens that can related. For teenagers, virtual communication is beginning to take over.
Teenagers in many foreign countries, such as Saudi Arabia have declared that for many years that have using the cheap technology of text messaging to evade government controls on dating and to format revolution in the Philippines. Now that it has made its way over to the United States, it has become today’s teen generation most outrageous form of behavior, including instant messaging and/or spending hours on facebook. (Pressler 1)
Market researches analyze that the age range for the use of the text messaging falls between the ages of 13-24. According to Sheri Cunningham, a Verizon Wireless spokesman, in the first quarter of 2006, 9.6 billion text messages were sent through their services. (Sekkas) Recently, Verizon Wireless has introduced their new unlimited text messaging plan because their highest bundle of text messaging which was 5,000 a month just wasn’t enough. (Pressler 1)
I believe the stastics with the use of virtual communication seem to grow every year, which I believe should be a concern with society. I feel as the cell phone services or internet services are making it easier has the years go on to be able to communicate virtually. I say that is easier because when you look at text messaging there are cell phone services such as verizon wireless who have turned text messaging into an unlimited choice, and then when it comes to online instant messaging AOL has opened up a new system called AIM Express. This system was created for those who do not have to go through the process of downloading the whole instant messaging system. Also, an additional creation that has been developed is the AOL instant messaging system now available in cell phones along with text message, which is another attraction towards this generation.
Recently, I interviewed two of my friends’ one male and one female. The reason I chose two different genders because I wanted to see if there was difference outlook between male and female when it comes to the world of virtual communication.
INTERVIEW:
My first question stated: How would you define virtual communication?
Female: I would best define virtual communication as a way to stay updated on today’s society. It’s the world at arms reach. A way to communicate much faster with the world than the average phone conversation or basic, modern exchange
Male: Virtual communication is way of communicating between 2 people in a world that doesn’t involve personal face to face conversation.
My second question stated: Do you believe virtual communication is an issue in society, today?
Female: No, I do no believe that virtual communication is an issue in society.
Male: No, it’s actually a pretty good way to communicate with friends and family that don’t live close to you.
My third question stated: 3. Do you use text messaging? Why or Why not?
Female: Yes I do use text messaging. I use it every single day. I use it because it is a simple way of communicating the simple things, instead of wasting time on the phone. It is a convience because if someone is not able to talk on the phone, a simple text is available to use.
Male: No, my phone doesn’t have text messaging, it was blocked.
My fourth question stated: Do you use instant messaging? Why or Why not?
Female: Yes I do use instant messaging. I use instant messaging because it opens another opportunity of communication. I not only use it on my computer, but also on my blackberry phone. I am always reachable on instant message, which is an excellent thing, in case of all other communications failing.
Male: Yes, it’s a great way to keep up wit people without talking, you just type and it’s a back and forth response.
My fifth question stated: Do you prefer face-to-face communication or virtual communication? Why?
Female: I prefer face-to-face communication, because I am human. As humans we like physical and verbal contact. We have emotion, as opposed to some virtual communication, has no emotion.
Male: No, I tend to do a lot of my communication with people over the computer; it gives me the chance to get things done and talk also, especially when I’m on a computer. Face to face sometimes can extend and i won’t keep up with time.
My sixth (last) question stated: What are some effects do you believe virtual communication has on society, today?
Female: I believe some of the effects of virtual communication are a fast paced world. We get things processed around the world much faster. From flights, to conducting the railroads, everything seems to be with virtual communication. I also believe that it saves a lot of time to use virtual communication instead of doing things the long way or by average communication.
Male: Virtual communication can tend to make people very lazy and effortless to do things face to face or personally. But this is with most technology but with virtual communication, it keeps people from actually meeting up, things can just be handled over text messaging, instant messaging or email, also when you communicate in a virtual world, you can basically can’t explain yourself fast enough and you can’t take what you say back. Once it was written and sent, it’s nothing you can really do!
As I analyzed their outlooks on virtual communication I realized that virtual communication can have its positives and negatives. Virtual communication can develop problems, but also can be an aid to society. As each person that was interview broke down, virtual communication forms that fast pace, easy –going type of communication, which is not always the case with face-to- face communication. I believe virtual communication can be taken to new heights, but then how would that help face-to-face communication.

Fieldwork Plan… October 17, 2007
Posted by tonib15 in : Uncategorized , add a commentIf I had to decide on a fieldwork plan, I would choice the survey option. I believe the survey option, fits my question the best. The environment I am in(college campus), would make it more reasonable. The first step I would take would be to build questions towards the survey. Such as simple questions:
1. How often do you text message?
2.Why do you text message?
3.Do you find instant messaging communication easier than face-to-face communication? Why or Why not?
4.Why does it seem as though text messaging is more common with teens than adults(ages 30-up)?
