well let me see……I knew nothing about World of Warcraft…until i read this paper. the idea of killing a level fifty person or online dueling is weird to me because i am so into live interaction live games where you just blow people up..but the information is good and the paper is excellent and for someone who knew nothing about WoW they would be able to know pretty much everything they need to know about it…the sources are good because a majority of them are actualy players and even researchers so keep up the good work and your paper will be great when completed…

The paper has a great balance. I like how it shows that these games can be benificial but you just have to do it in moderation. You mentioned how they make it take a long time to play to gain profits. Do you think the companies purposly try to make the game addicting so they gain more profits. Is this ethical? Good sources, might be intresting to talk more indepth about people who lost their jobs or withdrew from socitey because of the games addition. You could just use this point as a warning sign to only play these games in a healthy moderation.

since I wrote yours and I can’t get it back now. I’ll summarize it in this comment.

1. I think the article with Heim was the most effective.
2. you used some blogs, articles, and some possibly peer reviewed journals.
3. I don’t know what other sources you could possibly use.
4. You could possibly explain some of the terms of WoW more. I don’t understand it some.

i also posted two pages that had my rough draft and my final that i turned in, i will not be printing them out though because thats a lot of paper and i will not waste any more of Sherwood’s time (you have both drafts anyway) but the comments i recieved from my paper helped me to revise it some, and the group members commented on what they though was missing.

reflection

May 8th, 2007

my reflection on the final paper was actually good because i enjoyed the subject matter that i was talking about and i really did want to know about WoW, as a non gamer (playing WoW that is) i didnt know much about the games set up and story line, but through research i found out many things about the game, the revision of my draft was pretty intense i’d say because i cut out about 2 pages of unneccisary crap that looked like an add on, or after thought.

All in all the paper went over really well.

Social Skills and Cooperation in MMORPG’s

“World of Warcraft” (WoW) is a massive multi-player online role playing game (MMORPG). The games main goal is to complete quests find weapons and items during quests, killing bosses and killing other players that are not in the same realm. There are two realms, one is the alliance and the other is the horde. In these two realms you can choose different races to be during the game. The players play the role of there character that they make themselves. World of Warcraft is very beneficial to its players because it brings them together and makes them work cooperatively and builds their social skills. Any WoW player will tell you that if you want to do “instances” or go into high level quests to take down legendary bosses or do any “high level mission” you’ll get slaughtered instantly if you do it alone! You need to do missions as a party or team; this is how WoW encourages cooperation and builds the players social skills.
Most M.M.O.R.P.G.’s have what is called player versus player (PvP) and this is where the alliance will fight a horde in a duel (where you have a friendly fight between two players of the same realm and who ever losses doesn’t die, it’s a friendly dual). WoW is said to have good PvP fighting there is more moves and spells and other gamer tactics than other MMORPG’s.
“Dueling is another fun activity, and a good way to hone PvP skills. There are many strategies you can use for each class depending on which Talent Path you decided to take. Two people can play the same class differently and still succeed.” (WWEKnight)
But not all PvP has to be on a small scale, battles can be between hundreds of people and working together with your teammates is crucial “Battles can range from small one on one too hundred on hundred” (Rivius) that means that there are hundreds of people playing this game together, cooperatively and against each other, but the other team is working together as well. PvP is a great way to make friends and have fun with them and possibly meet new people in the process. This is just one way that WoW is helping cooperative game play and building its players social skills and therefore making the gamers themselves more cooperative. PvP is also making the players want to accomplish goals because there is a ranking system where the more people from the opposite realm you kill the higher your rank goes. Players fight each other all the time trying and trying to become better than the rest. This is why MMORPG players try so hard to accomplish goals and play together. (Heim)
Parties are an excellent way for people to have fun together and accomplish goals and get new equipment to grow with their characters. Being a role-playing game, players can earn new spells and attacks with the gain of two levels. Being in a party makes it possible for lower-level characters to defeat higher owns. If there are four forty-level players in a party those players could defeat a 50 level creature. This is a good way for people to play the game together and have fun with one another, and use their social skills to help each other survive. This is a good way for the players to get loot items, weapons and armor in the game as well. They can sell these items for gold or use the items themselves. Rivius (a GameFaqs.com opinion poster) has an opinion about his party playing experience, he states
“Parties-In no time I was in a party with 4 people and we were doing quests and leveling together. The quests kept coming and coming and didn’t end. Soon we were taking stuff double our level. There are so many types of looting ways. You can set it to need before Greed, or Group Loot, or Free for All. With parties you can do the impossible that you by yourself couldn’t do.”
WoW can help you find new friends that have the same hobbies as you do and you will find yourself adding them to your friends list. Agamemnon582bc (a GameFaqs.com opinion poster) says that he has found friends on this game in his multiplayer section of his review. He also thinks that in order to get far in the game you must work with others in the game and work cooperatively.
“The game itself is all based upon other players, which you will have to interact with if you wish to further progress in the game. Of course, like in other MMO’s or casual RPG’s, after a while you actually might find some intelligent people, whom you quickly add to your friend’s list.” (Agamemnon582bc)
Sense there are over 8million people that play WoW there will be people that you find that have many things in common with you. You can team up with them in a party and then do cooperative quests with. These are great examples of how MMORPG’s develop social skills and team playing in its users. (Heim)
Jeremiah’s role in the party is to take damage and make sure the enemy that the party is fighting doesn’t attack the healers. He is also supposed to use a move set called “shouts” which agitates the enemy and makes the enemy attack Jeremiah. This job class is called a warrior; warriors have high hit points (health) and great defense. When he was asked “what is your main goal in the party?” he said_______________________________.
The time consumption is believed to be the biggest problem in WoW, it takes a long time to become a high level character so the players play all the time. People become addicted to things that they find interesting, intriguing, and just plain fun.
“World of Warcraft, even in its current beta stage, is an incredibly rich, complex, and fascinating world to explore. However, developing a high-level character isn’t something that happens in minutes or hours–the process takes weeks and months. Make sure you’re up to the commitment.” (First Look)

1. “When was the last time you hung out with 8 million people?” “You can’t do it alone when it comes to World of Warcraft” “Corruption verses cooperation and World of Warcraft”,

Richard Roberts.

2. In this research essay I will be displaying several instances of people honing in on their people skills and making the players of this game cooperate together in order to finish quests. I will deem it necessary to cooperate with one another to accomplish goals throughout the game world of warcraft. I will attempt to disprove that this game is corrupting our youth and making them lesser beings.

3. “World of Warcraft” (WoW) is a massive multi-player online role playing game (MMORPG) and is very beneficial to its players because it brings people together and makes them work cooperatively. These are my primary sources they are real people that have experienced “playing together” on warcraft and will help me prove my point

5. What makes this game fun it that there is P.v.P. and that stands for player verses player, and this may not be cooperative but it still allows the two WoW players to interact with one another in the game and they can talk about the fight after it is over to discuss it. This creates friendships and through these friendships they become less anti-social like the game is said to be. The ability to chat between players and the ability to be in groups in WoW allows the players to become more social with one another. Some people meet friends they have never met before while playing WoW and it is because of the game that these gamers are friends. This game is a hobby but it isn’t a hobby that makes the players anti social, although time consuming, warcraft has 8 million people that play, so this hobby isn’t antisocial it is almost as social as can be. “When was the last time you had fun with 8million people?”

MMORPG the addiction

These sites above give research information and are good sources that i will use in my research essay. They seem to think that MMORPG’s consume time on a high level. and i think this is true because my self as a gamer i find myself playing games and they arent made to be able to be finished or concorded easily or quickly. I think these games where you have to PAY$$$$ to play are made to be addictive and Blizzard (makers of WoW) knew this and are using massive multiplayer online roleplaying games to make them all filthy rich…. 8.5 million people play WoW and they have to pay $40 for the game and $15 per month …. thats a lot of money!

Working in Groups (#2)

March 8th, 2007

I thought working in these groups were helped me because i didnt want to read the whole book, but reading the one section and then presenting it to the class in a format the we chose was a good idea, i think that it was helpful to be able to look at the other groups works and figure out what was the theme of their particular chapter that i was interested in.
